French Conference for the Study of Wargaming

The Institut d’études de stratégie et de défense (IESD) is pleased to invite you to the first edition of the Assises Françaises d’Étude du Wargaming (AFEW), to be held on 29 and 30 April 2024 at the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3.

With a growing interest in France for wargaming and its methods, this conference aims to launch a collective reflection process to lay the foundations of a new collaborative network whilst promoting each member’s work and specialty

The event has a dual structure:

  • With conference sessions, addressing the subject of wargaming, via its methodology, its creation processes, its structuring actors (what is the link between designers and end-users, military and civilian?) as well as its diverse uses, putting all these issues into historical and critical perspective.
  • The late afternoons will be devoted to hands-on experience, with presentations of professional wargames by their creators, providing an opportunity to discuss their objectives, creation processes and employment frameworks.
